Legend has it that the first fabrics arrived in Venice during the Vitale Falier’s dogado (1084-1096): emperor Henry IV visiting Venice got infatuated with a Venetian lady, to whom he donated his precious cloak made for the occasion by a Greek tailor.
Beyond the legend, the fabric was already known in Venice, but not the art of working it.
This was thought of by many spinners, weavers and dyers from Lucca, in 1300, fleeing their city for political reasons: once in Venice they settled in an area between the church of the Holy Apostles – Calle della Bissa – and the churches of San Giovanni Grisostomo and San Canciano.
By 1347 this art was so established that velvet weavers already had their own guild. The art of silk weavers, on the other hand, (“filadori de seta”) was born in 1488 and has its first headquarters in Campo dei Gesuiti, then in the Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Misericordia.
Your host, Lorena and Serena – mother and daughter – grew up in a reception and catering oriented family.
Lorena has lived in this sector for decades and has been able to pass on to her daughters the value of hospitality and dedication.
Serena, after a degree in tourism economics, aware of the intrinsic value of her city, has accepted the challenge of maintaining a family tradition by offering a different and more conscious vision of Venice.
